your thoughts may scatter

This isn't a villanelle but I thought you would like it. The author is unknown. it was found in a motel in Texas in the 60's

When you get what you want,in the struggle of life,and the world makes you king for a day;
Just go to a mirror and look at yourself and see what that man has to say.
He's the fellow to please, never mine all the rest,for he's with you clear to the end.
And you have passed your most difficult test if the man in the glass is yourfriend.
You may win the whole world and get pats on your back when you pass,
But your final reward will be heartache and tears, if you cheated the man in the glass.
Hope you like it, I have remembered it for the last 46 years since I came across it one night in a motel outside of Laredo,Texas in 1965.
